Artist Statement
Perhaps my background in dance, both modern and ballet, contributes to what I put into making art. Raised in an intensely intellectual and serious avant-garde social activist family, my work comes out of my background, but is primarily a departure from it.
Gaiety, wit, playfulness, movement and sometimes serenity. These are the ingredients of my drawings. Add color (acrylic, acrylic ink, and/or oil) and you have paintings. Elaborately layered, they are also about transparency (and perhaps mystery and secretiveness).
The work reflects my sensitivity and interest in landscape -- standing on the ground or viewed from above, either from a plane or from topographical maps, as well as abstract reference to the landscape of dreams.
